Response to recording:

What are some positive things that surprised you about this recording vs. how it sounds wherever you are sitting in rehearsal?

What are some rough things that surprised you about it?

Winds: Do you feel like you play in tune? Percussion: do you feel like your hands are even?
Percussion, scale 1-10 how much control you feel like you have over your sticks (1 being NO control, 10 being complete, monster dominance over the sticks):

How do you know if you are in tune or hands are even? What are some indications?

With regards to your playing, where are you struggling the most with this music?

Side questions:

  1. Why do you like music? What do you like about it? Why do you play music?

2. As an instrumentalist, what feels good about playing your instrument?
(brief example: when I breathe into my tenor saxophone and a note comes out, I literally feel my brain chemistry change)

3. What do you like most about the way you play music?

4. Where do you get the most frustrated about playing music?

5. Do you know how to play every note you see in your music? If not, which ones are giving you the most trouble?

6. What rhythms are the most challenging for you to read, if any?

7. What kind of music are you listening to in your free time?

The following is due for Q1:
1) an updated portfolio:
-the Q1 lead sheet (done by many already at progress report time)
-professionalism checklist (done by many already at progress report time)

2) login to sight-reading factory.com (redeem your student code)

3) 6 listening responses in the forum.
All the info is below.

It's very tricky to track 125 students.

One of the ways we try and figure out where you're at is through the use of a portfolio.

Each MDIHS music student is required to make a portfolio and keep it updated. This PDF describes what should be in your portfolio.

The first step is making sure you are in our group folder. You should've received an invite to the folder MDIHS MUSIC ASSESSMENT in Google Drive. If you haven't, please let Mr. Remy know as soon as possible or click HERE. You have to access the folder using your MDIRSS school email.

Once you are a member of that folder, click on the folder 000 and go from there. Inside this folder are instructions for what you are to do for Q1(a), my portfolio to use as a sample as to what your portfolio should look- and all of the materials you need to make it happen!

This initial setup document is there too.

Please have your portfolio up to date by Thursday, Sept. 28 at 3pm in addition to your two responses to the listenings in the FORUM.
